Trinity Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Russia. You can visit it when you travel in Russia. The cathedral represents an example of classic Russian architecture. This cathedral can receive about three thousand visitors at once. You can visit this cathedral on Russian river cruises.

This cathedral was damaged during the flood which took place in 1824. Only four years later the church was rebuilt by the order of Russian tsar Nicolas I. He ordered Vasily Stasov to rebuild the Trinity Cathedral. It took several years to rebuilt it.In 1835 the Cathedral was ready.

As the cathedral was a regimental church for the Izmailovsky regiment, there you can find flags, trophies, and keys from the fort that the regiment won during several campaigns in 1854-55 and in 1877-78. The beginning of the XXth century was marked by some events that lead to the closure of the Trinity Cathedral. Many valuable things preserved in the cathedral were stolen.

The Soviet period was very difficult time not only for the people, but also for many historical monuments of Russia. Many of the monasteries were destroyed at that time, but the Trinity cathedral survived as it became a warehouse during the Soviet time.

Only in the last decade of the 20th century the cathedral was given back tho the Russian Orthodox Church, The cathedral was restored and now it is opened to the visitors.

Donskoi Monastery

I am continuing facts about Russia rubric. One of the beautiful monasteries of the 16th century, the Donskoi Monastery, was built in 1591 by the order of Boris Godunov. The monastery was built in honor of the Donskaya Icon of the Mother of God. It was believed that this icon brought luck and victory the Grand Prince of Russia. Before any battle Russian troops paraded the icon, as it was believed that it gave victorious spirit to soldiers. The icon was left in the chapel until the battle was over and Tatars were defeated. Donskoi Monastery was built n the very place of the chapel.

But later during the century the monastery was robbed and abandoned. Only in the 17-18 centuries it was brought to life again. New fortifications were made during the reign of Peter the Great. In the 18-th century the monastery became a very popular burial place. Many princes and other members of the royal family ere buried there.

After the revolution of 1917, the monastery was closed, so it resulted in eviction of monks from the Donskoi Monastery. By 1929, the monastery became the Museum of Atheism. Bolsheviks turned the monastery into prison, where many prominent people of the time were imprisoned, among them the orthodox patriarch Tikhon. After his death the fire destroyed the monastery, only the Donskaya Icon of the Mother of God was not touched by the fire.

In 1934 Russian museum of Architecture was open in the Donskoi Monastery in order to prevent the monastery from being fully destroyed by the Bolsheviks. You can visit this monastery on when you sail on Russian river cruises. Please feel free to ask questions about Russia vacation packages and I will be glad to help you.

St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod

Novgorod is one of the most ancient cities of Russia and if you travel in Russia, you should consider visiting it.  It has many historical monuments belonging to different epochs. As it was the main Russian city in the 10-13 centuries, so many historical and cultural monuments date back to that period. It was not only cultural but also religious center of the country. Many churches and cathedrals were built there. Novgorodians were very proud of all the monuments they had in the city and especially of St. Sophia Cathedral, which was considered as a monument symbolizing their independence.

One of the most magnificent Cathedrals was the St. Sophia Cathedral, built by Vladimir of Novgorod. It took several centuries to build the cathedral, as new parts were added during the time. Very often fires destroyed or damaged some parts of the St. Sophia Cathedral. In the 15-th century white stone bell tower was added, then the clock tower, which was finished only by 1673.

During World war the Second, the St. Sophia cathedral managed to survive. When the Spanish came there, they took away the large cross from the main dome of the church. Only in 2004, the cross was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.

If you decide to travel in Russia, don’t forget to visit Novgorod and its famous St, Sophia Cathedral, the gates of which are opened only twice per year on special occasions. During your visit to Russia, you will have a chance to admire many other historical and cultural monuments that can be found in any city of Russia. Useful information about Russia hotels

Moscow Hotels Review

Welcome to Moscow Hotels Review,

My name is Natalia and I know how difficult it could be to find a good hotel in Moscow. I have decided to start this blog to share my insights about Moscow hotels. As someone who has worked for years in a travel agency that specializes on travel to Russia and Moscow I have pretty good insights about accommodation in Moscow.

I will appreciate your contributions as well. If you have something to share about Moscow hotels, I am sure that visitors of this blog will be interested in hearing it. So please, do not hesitate to add posts or comments.

I would like to start this blog with a very simple, yet important advice about staying in Moscow. Instead of booking a hotel in Russia, consider renting an apartment. You can be staying in the center of the city, living in a comfortable apartment and pay three times less than what you would have paid for your Moscow hotel in a comparable location and of comparable comfort level.

How do you get an apartment in Moscow? You can Google it, or you can contact me. Our agency has a pretty good selection of apartments and can organize it all for you. The advantage of doing this through my agency is that you can pay with a credit card over the phone or online. If you try to book directly from some Russian firm they will ask you to send a bank wire, which costs $35. Besides, when you book from my firm, you are booking from an American travel agency so you can be sure that everything will go smoothly.

If you have any question about Moscow and St Petersburg hotels please do not hesitate to ask.
