Novgorod is one of the most ancient cities of Russia and if you travel in Russia, you should consider visiting it.  It has many historical monuments belonging to different epochs. As it was the main Russian city in the 10-13 centuries, so many historical and cultural monuments date back to that period. It was not only cultural but also religious center of the country. Many churches and cathedrals were built there. Novgorodians were very proud of all the monuments they had in the city and especially of St. Sophia Cathedral, which was considered as a monument symbolizing their independence.

One of the most magnificent Cathedrals was the St. Sophia Cathedral, built by Vladimir of Novgorod. It took several centuries to build the cathedral, as new parts were added during the time. Very often fires destroyed or damaged some parts of the St. Sophia Cathedral. In the 15-th century white stone bell tower was added, then the clock tower, which was finished only by 1673.

During World war the Second, the St. Sophia cathedral managed to survive. When the Spanish came there, they took away the large cross from the main dome of the church. Only in 2004, the cross was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
